Fourth of July

"Settler colonialism" is a term historians use to describe a process nations sometimes use to annex new land. When people already occupy the new land, which is the case in every instance, settler colonialism is a way to perpetrate genocide. It is an effective way. It is probably the most effective method of genocide ever employed. When we celebrate the fourth of July, we do well to remember that the United States arose from 400 years of settler colonialism. That is, 400 years of genocide perpetrated against the indigenous population. An example: the recent completion of an oil pipeline across a river on Sioux land. The pipeline's route was changed to avoid polluting the water supply of white settlers in the region. Better to pollute Sioux waters. Let us remember on the fourth of July that the founding genocide of the United States continues today.
